The Harz food culture is strongly characterised by the Harz low mountain range. Thanks to the lush forests and rich rivers of the Harz, fish and game are the main ingredients on the typical regional menu. Whether game goulash, roast venison or deer or a Harz brown trout ‘Müllerin Art’, all this is typical.

 

The Harz cheese, with its high protein content and well-known odour, which was a staple food of the Harz miners, is also worth mentioning. The ingredients of these so-called Tscherperessen were cheese, sausage, lard and, of course, bread.

After a hard day's work, there was of course no shortage of drink. Consequently, the Harz art of brewing should be emphasised. Whether the world-famous brands ‘Schierker Feuerstein’ and ‘Hasseröder-Premium-Pils’ or typical local drinks brand ‘Eigenbrau’. Here too, the Harz is rustic, rich and varied.
