With the Harz narrow-gauge railway

travelling in the Harz Mountains

They puff up the mountain and roll down the hill - the trains of the Harz narrow-gauge railway. They are on the move, travelling across the Harz Mountains from Wernigerode to Nordhausen or right across the eastern Harz Mountains on the Selketalbahn or up to the highest peak in the Harz Mountains - the Brocken. You should not miss out on this puffing experience.

With the small trains

to Wernigerode Castle

There are two different small railways in Wernigerode. One is the Wernigerode Bimmelbahn and the other is the Wernigerode Castle Railway.

Both miniature railways travel to Wernigerode Castle during opening hours. The exact departure times can be found on the respective Bimmelbahn and Schlossbahn websites. In adverse weather conditions, especially snow and slippery conditions, the railways are not permitted to transport guests. For this reason, there may be disruptions to the journey. The Wernigerode Castle Railway then deploys its panorama buses.

Special trips for groups of up to 200 people (Wernigeröder Schlossbahn), such as pick-ups from hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, day-care centres, youth hostels, schools, car parks and railway stations, are available on request.

  • The Wernigerode Bimmelbahn has its central stop in Marktstraße, directly behind the town hall. From there, it travels to the castle every 20 minutes in the summer months and every 40 minutes in the winter months. The Bimmelbahn also offers public tours of the town at regular intervals.

With the horse-drawn carriages

to Wernigerode Castle

A covered wagon ride or carriage ride through Wernigerode or would you prefer a sleigh ride through the snow-covered winter forest of the Harz Mountains? Horse-drawn carriages from various haulage companies are available in Wernigerode.

Rides to Wernigerode Castle are offered from Marktstraße on the days the castle is open and weather permitting. The meeting point is the bus stop at the flower clock behind the town hall. The carriages do not travel according to a timetable but according to passenger capacity.

Other round trips and horse-drawn carriage tours through Wernigerode and its surroundings are available on request for groups. Information is available from the individual carriage companies.

Some companies also offer carriage rides up the Brocken.
