Harz National Park
The Harz National Park, one of the largest forest national parks in Germany, covers an area of around 24,700 hectares in the heart of the Harz Mountains. The park, which was established in 1990, is located in both Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt and offers an impressive variety of flora and fauna as well as numerous opportunities for outdoor activities.

The Brocken - the highest peak in the Harz Mountains
At 1,141 metres, the Brocken, also known as the "Blocksberg", is the highest mountain in the Harz Mountains and in the whole of northern Germany. The summit of the Brocken is a popular excursion destination and offers breathtaking views over the national park and far beyond.

Hiking trails
There are several well-marked hiking trails that lead up the Brocken. The best-known routes start in the villages of Schierke and Torfhaus. For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, the Brockenbahn, a historic steam railway, offers a nostalgic and picturesque ride to the summit. Mysticism and legends
The Brocken is not only famous for its height, but also for the numerous myths and legends that surround it. For centuries, it has been regarded as a magical place that is the focus of many stories and customs, especially on Walpurgis Night on 30 April. According to tradition, witches and wizards are said to have gathered on the Brocken, giving the mountain a mysterious reputation.
